Ye Olde Startup at LinuxWorld
Having found myself in Northern CA I couldn’t help but do a startup. Those are Linux desktops running power efficient hardware and software. Notice they’re plugged into power meters to show off the low watts used. We were going to be like a mashup of a linux systems integrator, a social networking site for OS support, and a green computer manufacturer. We had some seasoned folks on our team (former head of environmental compliance for a major computer manufacturer, VP of marketing for big green companies, NASA engineer, and so on…), and a decent idea, but the market for PCs was too lukewarm and, in hindsight, we should have just stuck to software so we wouldn’t need any investment capital. Companies like Zareason and System76 have a good opportunity to do more than plain system integration since they get a built-in OS to play with, and hardware supply chain flexibility… something Apple has over Microsoft. I miss my startup colleagues.
